But first, let me introduce myself. My name is Helen Brougham. For the past 25 years, I have been helping Mums, Dads and children throughout Australia live healthier, happier, more joy-filled, peaceful lives using holistic massage and empowerment coaching techniques that create breakthrough results – physically, emotionally and spiritually!

I am a happily married Mum of 4 and a grandmother. I enjoy being with my family and I love working in my massage clinic. However, this was not always the case for me.

For many years, before knowing what I know now, I was stressed out and overloaded from working hard on a farm, caring for four small children and my husband. I did not know what muscles were or why I was in constant pain. I just wanted to feel better.

I thought going to the health food and herb shop would fix me, but I never really felt better. I had always been a person that did not take prescription medications and I came from a family that did not take them either. But, I was worn out and had enough.

The breaking point for me was when my grandparents died 8 days apart. I was consumed with grief and I had my family and farm to take care of. Some days were so difficult for me that I could barely get out of bed. I was a physical and emotional wreck. I was stressed out beyond belief and I didn’t have any idea what to do about it.  I had not experienced this kind stress before!  And before we knew what happened … EVERYONE got sick …

My four children, my husband and I, we all had the flu and all of us were really sick and we stayed sick for a long time. The only time I went to the Doctor was when I needed stitches from injuries – like cutting the end of my finger off and for the birth of my four children. But this was different I could not seem to shake the flu. Weeks later, I still felt exhausted. I finally went to the Doctor and told him that I needed something, anything. So he prescribed relaxers for me.

Months went by. I seemed better, but the dry mouth and the constant feeling of being sedated was awful. Every time I tried to stop taking those pills, I could feel overwhelming anxiety coming back. This was causing me even MORE stress.

Six months later I went and had a massage, I did not know about massage back then because I was living out in the country and I had never heard of it. So, I was scared to do this massage thing, but I was more scared of feeling the way I was feeling for the rest of my life.  I found after that massage, that my body felt light again, my mind had stop chattering … all the noise was finally quiet. I felt peaceful for the first time in a long time.

I drove home from that massage a completely different person … I was relaxed and calm once again. I could be the wife and mum my family deserved.

Three months later I made the decision to go the city to learn professional massage and become licensed. When I came home, I bought a brand new massage table and each of my children and husband got their first massage. It was a new experience for them and they loved it. Now 21 years later, my children still love their massages and now my grandchildren have regular massage as well.

Allow me to take a minute and share a story about one of my grandsons …

My grandson was always jumping around, full of energy and excited – too excited … When people came to visit, he would get over-excited and silly. This happened again one day when I was visiting and my daughter decided to give him a massage on his back and his feet over the weekend. It turned out that he loved having his feet massaged.

What I noticed when I was visiting the next week, even before my daughter had said anything to me, was that my grandson was so much calmer around us. He wasn’t interrupting us while we were talking and when it was his turn to speak, he was speaking more calmly and not rushing to get the words out like he usually did. His words were clear and easy to understand. I also noticed that he was even walking more slowly.

My daughter got reports back from his teacher at school that his reading all of a sudden improved and that his speech had improved. He was talking more slowly because his mind was not going a hundred mile an hour. At the playground, he was finally making friends with the other children. Previously, they had not wanted to play with him because of his behavior. This really improved his confidence and his attitude. The teacher was so surprised by all of these “overnight” changes, that she asked my daughter to explain what was going on with my grandson.

So my daughter told his teacher how she had started massaging her son and what massage did to help him –  How the techniques that she used released the stress and tension from his muscles and mind … How they helped reduce the high level of anxiety energy that was overloading his body so that he naturally calmed down and relaxed … How everything was done naturally, without any sort of prescription medication.

The teacher was shocked. Previously, she had told my daughter that my grandson needed to be seen by a behaviour problems therapist, a learning problems therapist and a speech therapist. She had also told my daughter that he needed to start taking prescription medications for his “issues”.  He did not need to see these professionals because he had improved so much. And, he did not need to take any prescription medications to help him manage his “issues”.

Stress is very sneaky. It shows up in lots of different ways – backaches, headaches, stomachaches, outbursts of anger, crying, moodiness, bad social behaviour, bad grades, the inability to get along with other people, etc., etc., etc. …. Stress affects everyone especially children. From preschoolers to teens, anxiety and stress are a part of every child’s life. From fear of the dark or monsters in the closet to coping with the pressures of school, peers and tests, each child experiences their own fears, anxieties and feelings of stress.

Generally, children are very open and receptive to learning relaxation techniques and the skills they need for stress management. Teaching your children these techniques and skills is giving them tools that will benefit them throughout their entire lives.

Often, it’s the simple, down to earth ways of helping that work the best.

Massage and spending time one on one with our children is very important. But, perhaps even more important is having massage yourself. When you are clear, calm and relaxed, you will make better choices.  A few months ago did you hear the stories all over the news that 7 out of every 10 children are taking some kind of tablets every day?

What happens in childhood … Continues in adulthood and your children need time and space to be children and grow into life.  As a parent you grow with them and show them a good way, a better way, that is down to earth and works. What a wonderful gift to to give children and ourselves –  tools that will last them their entire lives … tools that will give them love, peace and joy throughout life.

Hi, I've recently fell upon your massage video for stress free children. I've tried to find the site to purchase the videos, but can't seem to find it. I would like to know if you can still it to me since my son is having a lot of difficulty in school due to the stress of final exams. I think that those videos would help alleviate the worrying stress I see in him everyday after school. Thanks so much!
